Combi Systems: Combi or Multi Systems are gardening tools designed to allow multiple attachments to be used on a single engine unit. The engine units come in a variety of sizes, however different manufacturers rely upon different engine technologies, 2 stroke engines are more prevalent however they tend to be noisier and more polluting than the 4 strokes used in the more expensive machines. 4 stroke machines rely upon a more complex mechanism to produce power and can be heavier as a result however they do not require a pre mix of fuel and oil and are less likely to wear components down because they have “dedicated” lubricating oil in the engine. Other options to consider are electric powered systems which are available in both mains and battery powered varieties, although their range will be limited compared to petrol machines.
Many different attachments are available for use in these systems although different manufacturer’s machines and attachments are incompatible. The initial cost of both the engine unit and the attachments will be higher than a standalone unit however a multi system will be a cheaper alternative to individual purchases, if you have a requirement for multiple machines, such as a hedger, strimmer and chainsaw. Obviously buying attachments rather than separate tools will benefit the environment, as the extra energy and resources needed to produce engines for each use is far more wasteful than a single engine capable of all the tasks.
