Air travel: However much we may want to avoid flying on an aeroplane for holidays or business, often the distances involved mean that it's unlikely that a practical, environmentally friendly alternative is available.
Flying is usually highlighted as the least eco-friendly form of travel even though In the UK, air travel (both domestic and international) still only account for around 25% of the greenhouse gas emissions generated by road transport. This relatively low pecentage can be misleading however for two reasons:
- Air travel is forecast to be the fasting growing sector of transport emissions
- Unfortunatelty because the vast majority of aircraft emissions are released at high altitude sceintifcic research has shown that they are even more damaging to the environment as they cause a series of chemical reactions which have an accelerated warming effect. This means that every gram of CO2 produced by an aeroplane is at least 1.9 x more damaging than its equivalent produced at ground level.
As individuals we can't do much about the fuel efficiency of the aircraft in current use, but you can choose to balance out your proportion of the emissions through carbon offset schemes.
Go to our information page on carbon offset to find out the details and use our simple online calculator to offset your next flight. If your taking a car service to the Airport or being collected from a business trip why not try one of the new 'green' transfer services. A number of firms are nowing operating hybrids, running their fleets on BIODIESEL or off-setting emissions.
