Garden Hand Tools
Gardening Hand Tools:
Using hand tools in the garden is the “greenest” approach to gardening however not all gardening tools are equally environmentally friendly. When choosing a hand tool always try to buy a sustainably forested wooded product as opposed to plastic, which requires crude oil and complex manufacturing processes. An FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved implement will certify that the wood used in the production is from a sustainably managed forest and combine this with a recyclable metal (such as stainless steel) blade/fork so that your purchase has the smallest impact possible on the environment.
Keeping your tools in good condition will help extend their life and stop you having to replace them as often, cleaning and drying after every use is advised as well as occasionally using oil to polish and maintain the metal and woodwork. Replacing them less often means less new tools being made and therefore less energy and resources consumed in the production process. Conversely buying second hand equipment will be just as beneficial if not more so because no new materials are needed but you still get to use the hand tools.
