Public transport: Whilst the trains and buses of public transport networks tend to require bigger engines and therefore produce higher emissions, they are usually the more environmentally friendly choice (subject to occupancy) as their polluting effect per passenger mile travelled is nearly always lower. The following table sets out the relative environmental performance of different types of public transport in comparison to car and bicycle, with some occupancy assumptions.
